Septic Tank Pumping in Longview & Gregg County
The cheapest maintenance there is, and the one most reliably skipped until it is no longer the relevant problem.
A tank works by letting solids settle and grease float, so that what leaves it is clarified liquid. Both layers keep building. When there is no longer enough clear space in the middle, solids start leaving with the effluent and travelling out to the drainfield, where they blind the soil. At that point the cheap job has turned into the expensive one.
How often
Every three to five years is the usual guidance for a conventional household tank, but the interval is a function of your house, not a calendar rule. What shortens it:
- More people than the tank was sized for
- A garbage disposal, which roughly doubles the solids load
- Heavy laundry use, especially concentrated into one day
- A tank that is small for the house
- Flushing anything that is not waste or paper, including "flushable" wipes
The only way to actually know is to have the levels measured. A service visit does that, which is one of the reasons a service contract on a powered system is not purely a cost.
Powered systems are different
A powered treatment system still has a tank that needs pumping, but it is serviced on its own schedule and the pump-out is judged by the provider against measured sludge levels rather than against the calendar. Do not assume a service visit includes a pump-out, and do not assume it excludes one; ask what is in the contract.
What to expect on the day
- Access to the lids. If they are buried, that is either your job before the truck arrives or a line on the invoice.
- The tank emptied completely, not "topped off": leaving the liquid behind leaves the sludge behind too.
- A look at the baffles, the lids and the inlet and outlet while the tank is empty. This is the only time anyone can see them, so it is worth asking for.
- A note of what was found, for your records.
